GOKWE – A 23-year-old man who brutally killed his 69-year-old father after accusing him of practicing witchcraft, has been sentenced to 20 years in jail.

Tinevimbo Nyika of Kufazvinei Village, Chief Chireya in Gokwe North, was convicted of murder when he appeared at the High Court in Gokwe recently.

The court heard that on November 18, 2023, Tinevimbo and his father were at their homestead together with other family members. He approached his father and accused him of practicing witchcraft, stating that he had bewitched one of his brothers.

The now deceased was followed to the field by Tinevimbo. Upon their return home, the father struck Tinevimbo with a metal rod on the left knee. The two fought and Tinevimbo managed to disarm his father of the metal rod.

“The accused struck the now deceased on the head before the now deceased started to run away. The accused gave chase and caught up with him. He struck him on the head before assaulting him several times all over the body using the metal rod leading to his death,” said the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe.

    Tinevimbo was later arrested.
