Bulawayo, (New Ziana) – Security companies and the business community have been urged to develop strategies to combat the rising crime rates in Bulawayo, a move deemed essential to attract investors.

Minister of State for Bulawayo Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Judith Ncube, made the call during a stakeholder engagement meeting held in the city. Ncube warned that escalating crime levels pose a significant threat to investment prospects in Bulawayo.

“Security companies should have the expertise required to advise businesses on how to minimise risks. We are open for business and want foreign investors to explore opportunities in our country. Security plays a very critical part,” she said.

Ncube stressed the importance of employing reputable security firms to protect company assets and intellectual property. “It is advisable to engage tried and tested security companies that have been in the industry for many years to take care of our assets,” she added.

She noted that high crime rates would discourage investors from coming to invest in the city. “Our investors should feel at home and not have any fear of losing their investments and assets. As we deliberate on the current crime trends in the region, we must find measures to fight increasing crime so that we can thrive,” Ncube emphasized.

She also described the current crime rate as alarming, urging collaboration among all stakeholders to address the issue.

“The crime rate has reached alarming levels, and we need to put our heads together to tackle this problem. We are trying as leaders to bring investors into our province, but if they don’t feel safe due to robberies, we will lose them,” she warned.

Ncube appealed to residents to assist in fighting crime and corruption, highlighting the importance of anti-corruption teams and police intelligence units operating at provincial and district levels.

Bulawayo police spokesperson, Abednico Ncube, outlined ongoing efforts to curb crime, including the recently launched Smart City Surveillance System.

“We want to assure not only the people of Bulawayo but also anyone visiting the central business district that any form of criminality or misdemeanour will now be actively monitored from the control centre, and the police will respond,” he said.

He called for a united front among stakeholders to ensure the city remains a peaceful and stable environment.

“We urge stakeholders to have a unity of purpose and a common vision in fighting crime in Bulawayo, which will help the country continue to enjoy peace and stability,” Ncube added.

The stakeholder engagement highlighted the critical link between security and economic growth, with calls for collective action to ensure a safer city that fosters investor confidence.
