Bulawayo, (New Ziana)-Police in Bulawayo have arrested a murder suspect 15 years after the commission of the crime.

Bulawayo provincial police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Nomalanga Msebele on Monday confirmed the arrest of Justice Mpofu, also known as Ryan Ncube, a 39-year-old from Nkulumane high density suburb, who had been a fugitive from justice for the past 15 years.

Ass Insp Msebele said Mpofu was arrested after a tip off by members of the public of his presence in the community.

Mpofu is reported to have fatally shot 35-year-old Peter Sithole on April 14, 2010, in the Hope Fountain communal area while drinking beer with several other patrons inside a local bottle store.

“When the suspect committed the offence, who was in the company of his co-accused Thabani Solomon Mahlaba (now deceased) and Shadreck Zvigo (still at large), arrived at the bottle store armed with a pistol,” Msebele said.

He said upon arriving at the scene, Mpofu and his co-accused, began firing shots randomly into the ceiling of a crowded room, ordering all patrons to lie down. “In the process, they shot the now deceased on the head and he died on the spot.

“The suspects jumped over the counter and stole a till which contained ZAR 528-00, 2 x speakers and an amplifier before searching the patrons and got away with two cell phones.

“They fled from the scene. Thabani Solomon Mahlaba was later arrested in Zvishavane town on 24 April 2010 after a shoot-out with detectives and he led them to his house where two pistols, two disco speakers and an omega amplifier were recovered,” said Msebele.

Ass Insp Msebele said on January 11, detectives received information indicating that the suspect was planning to go to his in-law’s house in Nkulumane.

“Police reacted to the tip-off, leading to his arrest. A search was carried out in his white Toyota Mark X, resulting in the recovery of a black pellet pistol and a silver flip knife. He was also found in possession of a valid Zimbabwean plastic driver’s license bearing his portrait in the name of Ryan Ncube.

“He was interviewed about the whereabouts of his co-accused, Shadreck Zvigo, whom he mentioned he last saw during the commission of the murder offense,” said Msebele.

“As the police, we appreciate members of the public for supplying information that led to the arrest of the suspect.

“We would like to warn the public that no matter how long one hides after committing an offense, they should bear in mind that the long arm of the law will finally catch up with them. Ass Insp Msebele urged members of the public to desist from violent conduct, as this leads to unnecessary loss of lives.
