Harare (New Ziana) – A team of medical experts seconded to Zimbabwe by the Chinese government arrived in Harare on Monday to assist and advise the country in its ongoing fight against Covid-19.

The 12 member team, which comprises experts in various medical fields including laboratory testing and infectious disease control, also brought with them a huge consignment of medical supplies to escalate the fight against Covid-19.

Local Government, Public Works and National Housing Minister July Moyo received the team at the Robert Mugabe International Airport.

“The Chinese people who have come from the Province of Hunan are going to interface with our experts, they have been battling with covid-19 in their own country,” he said.

China, where the Coronavirus first broke out last year, has successfully reduced the number of active cases due to strict curfews and medical interventions.

As such, its success is a huge source of encouragement to other countries battling the disease and also a vital source of information.

Chinese ambassador to Zimbabwe, Guo Shaochun said the information to be shared by the medical team and the new supplies would strengthen Zimbabwe’s ability to fight Covid-19.

“The medical team have come here to exchange information, experience, lessons concerning the containment of Covid-19 also they bring a new batch of medical supplies donated by the Chinese government,” he said.

Deputy Head, Political Counsellor at the Chinese embassy in Harare Zhao Baogang said: “We have already sent medical teams to Ethiopia, Djibouti and also Burkina Faso and some other African countries. We will also send medical teams to Algeria and the DRC, (but) this time the Chinese medical team arrives in Zimbabwe, they will share their experiences and also provide training to Zimbabwean doctors and nurses.”

“We believe that this action will help bolster the relations between the two sides and help combat covid-19 in Zimbabwe.”

Zimbabwe currently has 36 cases of Coronavirus including four deaths and nine recoveries.
