MUTARE – Residents of low-lying communities in the Chipinge district are being urged to remain vigilant as significant rainfall is forecasted for the northern districts of Manicaland Province.

This rainfall poses a heightened risk of river flooding, particularly in areas where tributaries of the Save River originate.

The warning comes from the Manicaland Provincial Civil Protection Committee (PCPC) in collaboration with the Meteorological Department (MSD), both of which have issued important advisories to the public.

The PCPC and MSD have identified specific areas at risk, including Chibuwe, Chisumbanje, and Mahenye. These communities are particularly vulnerable due to their geographical location, making them prone to flooding when heavy rains occur. The warning has prompted local authorities to call for immediate action and preparedness among residents.

Manicaland PCPC chairperson John Misi emphasised the importance of adhering to alerts from the Zimbabwe National Water Authority (ZINWA) and local officials.

“We urge all community members to stay informed and take this warning seriously. The safety of our residents is our top priority, and we must work together to mitigate the risks associated with flooding,” he said.

He added that the PCPC was on high alert and has provided clear guidelines for residents to follow during this critical period.

“We need to ensure that everyone knows what to do in case of an emergency,” added Misi.

Citizens are advised to move their belongings to higher ground to prevent damage in the event of flooding. Authorities have also cautioned against crossing flooded rivers and streams, as swift currents can pose significant dangers. Additionally, residents are encouraged to closely monitor weather updates and stay informed about the evolving situation.

Chief Mutema echoed these calls for vigilance, emphasising the community’s history with flooding. Past incidents have left lasting impacts, including property damage, displacement, and loss of livestock.

“We have seen the devastation that flooding can cause, and we must be proactive in protecting our families. By staying alert and prepared, we can reduce the impact of these rains,” he said.

The call for preparedness comes as the region gears for the rainy season, which typically brings both relief and challenges to communities dependent on agriculture. The heavy rains are essential for crop growth but can also lead to flooding if not managed properly.

Community members are reminded of the delicate balance between benefiting from the rains and protecting themselves from potential disasters.

Moreover, the PCPC is collaborating with ZINWA to monitor water levels in rivers and streams closely. Regular updates will be provided to keep the community informed of any changes that could indicate rising flood risks. Residents are encouraged to report any unusual changes in their environment, such as rapid water level increases, to local authorities immediately.
