MUTARE – The Mutare City Council has announced the designation of specific areas for urban cultivation, encouraging residents to grow crops within the city limits.
This initiative aims to promote food security and sustainable agricultural practices among urban dwellers, especially as the 2024 summer cropping season approaches.
Residents interested in cultivating crops are required to apply for permits through the council before the planting season begins. The designated areas for urban farming have been outlined on maps available at the council offices located at Moffat Hall in Sakubva. This proactive approach is intended to manage land use effectively while ensuring that agricultural activities comply with local regulations.
Charles Sadondo, the acting public relations officer for the city council, emphasised the importance of following the proper procedures.
“We advise anyone wishing to grow crops within the city boundaries to discuss their requirements with our Housing and Community Services department to obtain the necessary permits,” Sadondo stated.
This process is crucial for maintaining order and ensuring that urban farming activities do not interfere with other land uses.
The council’s initiative responds to the growing interest among residents in engaging in urban agriculture. As food prices continue to rise, many have turned to growing their own produce as a means of ensuring food security for their families. By designating specific areas for cultivation, the city council hopes to support these efforts while minimising potential conflicts over land use.
However, the council has issued a stern warning to those who attempt to cultivate crops in areas not designated for farming.
“We continue to face challenges with people farming in prohibited areas. These include land within 30 metres of stream banks, land within 10 metres of the road, sloppy or uphill areas and land surveyed for residential stands. Anyone found cultivating in illegal areas runs the risk of facing prosecution or having their crops slashed,” Sadondo cautioned.
This enforcement measure aims to deter illegal farming activities that could disrupt urban development and planning.
The designated areas for urban cultivation are expected to benefit not only individual households but also contribute to the broader community by increasing access to fresh produce.
Urban farming can play a vital role in improving nutrition and promoting healthier lifestyles among residents. The initiative also aligns with global trends in urban agriculture, which have gained momentum in recent years as cities seek sustainable solutions to food production.
As the summer cropping season approaches, council is encouraging residents to take advantage of this opportunity to cultivate crops legally and responsibly. By applying for permits and adhering to the guidelines set forth by the council, residents can contribute to a greener and more sustainable urban environment.
The Mutare City Council’s commitment to designating land for urban cultivation reflects a growing recognition of the importance of local food production in urban settings. As residents prepare for the upcoming cropping season, the hope is that this initiative will empower them to take control of their food sources while contributing positively to the city’s agricultural landscape.
