Harare (New Ziana) –President Emmerson Mnangagwa on Monday received an assortment of health-related consumables, and other donations to be used in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic from various local companies and a church organisation.
Zimbabwe, which is currently under a three week national lockdown in an effort to contain the virus, has nine Covid-19 cases including one death.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, through the Angel of Hope Foundation, donated face masks, sanitizers, gloves and medical gowns while a Chinese firm operating in Mutare, Timber Care, also donated face masks and ventilators.
A local company, Skylake offered to drill one borehole equipped with a water tank at Wilkins hospital and another at any other site chosen by government.
President Mnangagwa received the donations at State House.
“We are just showing you the response from various (organisations), these are from the church group the Latter Day Saints, it was mobilised through Angel of Hope foundation.
“Some of the things are still on their way, but we have already received sanitizers for hands as well as for spraying buses and streets in town and medical gowns then the masks and gloves some of which we have already given to the police,” he said.
“We are very grateful.”
Skylake director, Philip Chaitezvi said provision of clean water was crucial in the fight against Covid-19.
“I believe by us giving our contribution of water it will go a long way in helping ease the situation.”
Meanwhile, Zimbabwe is also set to benefit from the second batch of medical consumables donated by the Jack Ma foundation to all African countries.
“Our second donation to countries in Africa is on the way that includes 500 ventilators, 200k suits and face shields, 2k thermometers, 1 million swab and extraction kits and 500k gloves,” the Chinese billionaire wrote on Twitter.
Chinese ambassador to Zimbabwe Guo Shaochun confirmed the latest donation.
“Another batch of donations by Jack Ma Foundation is coming including the most needed ventilators. We are together to fight the virus.”
