Harare, (New Ziana) – Police have reported a significant decrease in road traffic accidents over the 30-day festive period from December 15, 2024, to January 15, 2025 compared to the same time last year.

According to police spokesperson, Commissioner Paul Nyathi, the number of road traffic accidents dropped from 3,607 during the previous festive season (2023-2024) to 2,936 in the just-ended period, (2024-2025).

“This decline is encouraging. However, it contrasts sharply with the rise in fatal accidents, which jumped from 118 to 133 in the same timeframe,” he said. “Additionally, while the total number of fatalities decreased from 162 to 155, the number of injuries rose significantly from 821 to 938.

These figures underline a troubling trend where fewer accidents lead to more injuries, highlighting the severity of incidents that do occur,” he said.

Nyathi said among the accidents reported, one tragic incident occurred on December 31, 2024, when three individuals lost their lives, and ten others were injured after an Isuzu KB 250 collided with a Toyota Probox carrying 13 passengers on the Harare-Chirundu Road.

This incident, he said, exemplifies the kind of severe outcomes that have become alarmingly common, despite the overall reduction in accidents.

“Moreover, pedestrian fatalities are of particular concern. Reports indicated that several pedestrians were killed at night while crossing roads, often struck by motorists who failed to stop.

“One such incident involved a 23-year-old man who died on January 1, 2025, after being hit by an unknown vehicle on Khami Road in Bulawayo. Similarly, another pedestrian was killed the same day on Magoda Road in Harare under comparable circumstances,” said Commissioner Nyathi.

In light of these statistics, the Zimbabwe Republic Police is urging motorists to exercise caution and prioritize road safety, particularly at night.

Drivers were reminded of their legal and moral obligations in the event of an accident as they are encouraged to stop, provide first aid to victims, and report the incident to the authorities promptly.
