MUTARE – In a disturbing incident that has drawn attention to security practices and child safety, Daniel Simango, a 44-year-old security guard from Mukono village, was sentenced for negligently causing bodily harm to a 10-year-old boy.
According to court documents, the incident occurred around 4.30 pm on October 12 when the complainant, along with his friends, attempted to sneak onto Luipaardsvlei Farm to steal macadamia nuts.
To gain access, the children stretched the farm’s fence, allowing them to enter the property undetected.
“Simango, who was on duty at the farm, noticed the children and approached them with his dog. In an alarming turn of events, he released the dog from its leash, which then attacked the boy, biting him multiple times on the left thigh and in the groin area. The attack resulted in severe injuries that required medical attention,” stated the National Prosecuting Authority.
Simango was sentenced to 14 months in prison, with seven months suspended for five years on the condition of good behaviour. The remaining term was suspended contingent upon his completion of 245 hours of community service.
Meanwhile, Mike Shingai of Gaza was remanded in custody by the Chipinge Magistrates Court on murder charges.
Allegations are that on October 31, Shingai found his girlfriend with the now deceased Heriman Kazembe in her bedroom.
“Shingai armed with a log confronted Kazembe and struck him with the wooden log on the head. Kazembe ran for about 4 meters before he fell. A neighbour who heard Kazembe crying rushed over and stopped Shingai from further assaulting him,” stated the NPA.
Kazembe was let go but never got home. He was found lying along the Birchenough-Mt Selinda Road and was rushed to hospital where he died upon admission.
Shingai was advised to apply for bail at the High Court.
