MARONDERA– Locally-based gospel artist Peter Kanda, affectionately known as The Light of Men, intends to release an eight-track gospel album Mhepo Yenyasha during this year’s Easter Holidays.

In an interview with Chaminuka, Kanda revealed that the album will be a collection of praise and deep worship songs crafted to inspire individuals’ closeness to God.

He said: “In a few months’ time, I will be releasing a gospel album that will contain eight songs. I have been taking much of my time in the studio so that at the end of the day, I come up with a polished album that I hope will endear me to my legion of fans in Marondera and beyond. The aim is to usher worshippers and other listeners into a deeper experience of God’s presence and grace in their lives.

“I am very excited about this upcoming album, which will feature uplifting and inspiring songs that proclaim the goodness and love of God. As I work on polishing the album, I am collaborating with a talented team of musicians and producers. We have been experimenting with different rhythms and instrumentation to create a unique sound that compliments messages to be contained on all the songs.”

The artist added that he fell in love with gospel music from a tender age, having grown up in a Christian family. This upbringing inspired him to use his voice and music talent to bring hope to others.

“I was exposed to gospel music from a young age and it sparked a fire within me. As I grew older, I felt an unmistakable nudging to use my voice and musical talents to spread the gospel and bring hope to others,” he said.

Biggest influences who have helped him shape his sound include legendary gospel music artists such as Pastor Charles Charamba, Baba Mechanic Manyeruke, and Pastor Blessing Shumba, whose unique blends of traditional and modern styles inspired him.

Tandi said in coming up with his music, he is inspired by social issues, personal experiences and some verses from the Bible. His music style is a fusion of Afrobeat, reggae and traditional contemporary African music, with a focus on meaningful lyrics and infectious rhythms.

He added: “What sets my music apart is the blend of traditional African elements that contain modern production techniques, creating a unique sound that resonates with a diverse audience. My songwriting process typically starts with a concept or idea, followed by humming melodies and experimenting with chord progressions. From there, I develop the lyrics and refine the arrangement.”

However, the biggest challenges that he has faced include navigating the competitive music industry, building a loyal fan base, and staying true to his artistic vision.

“To overcome obstacles, I focus on staying positive, seeking guidance from mentors, and continuously improving my craft. I’m not the only upcoming gospel musician yet to reach full potential. We are many but my advice to fellow artists is for them to stay authentic, persistent and open to learning. Develop a unique sound, engage with your audience, and always seek opportunities to grow and improve.

“I am striving to perform at major festivals and collaborate with seasoned and international artists, with the aim of releasing more music and building a huge fan base. In the long run, I see myself being regarded a leading gospel artist who spreads the message of hope and inspire positive change globally,” Tandi said.

He appreciated the support from his peers and gospel music fans.

“I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to my fellow musicians and those who always encourage me never to give up in my musical journey. As people, we should remember that God is our strength and our salvation. His love and peace is always with us and he keeps shining His light on us,” he said.
