Bindura(New Ziana) – A Bindura family on Thursday exhumed the body of a man it had buried believing it was that of their relative, after discovering bodies had mistakenly been switched at Parirenyatwa hospital.

Four days earlier, the Batina family had buried Robert Machemedze, 40, at Woodbrooke-Makusha cementary, believing it was Taurai Batina, 34, who had died at Parirenyatwa hospital in Harare.

The bodies of the two were mistakenly switched at the hospital, resulting in the Batina family taking that of Machemedze, leaving that of Taurai, their relative.

As of Thursday, Taurai’s body was still at Parirenyatwa hospital.

Simba Chikandira, a spokesman for the Batina family, said the exhumation had been done in consultation with the Machemedze family.

But the Machemedze family said it was concerned about the burial rituals that had been conducted on Robert’s body, but was happy to have retrieved it, nonetheless.
