Harare, (New Ziana) – The government has revived the food for work programme as part of food deficit mitigation measures as the country grapples with the effects of an El-nino induced drought.
Known as the public works programme, it involves food for work for non-disabled households during the lean season from now to next March. It is part of an array of strategies to ensure every person has enough food at the time of need.
Briefing the media on Tuesday, Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister, Dr Jenfan Muswere said all people benefitting from the Food Deficit Mitigation Strategy and Urban Cash Transfer Programme in both rural and urban areas will be expected to participate in Public Works programmes.
He said his Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare, counterpart, July Moyo had presented a report to cabinet showing that grain distribution increased during the week beginning June 20 June with 51 415.02 metric tonnes distributed to vulnerable and food insecure people by the following day.
Manicaland received 7 780.64mt; Mashonaland Central, (5 891.09mt); Mashonaland East, (5 207.06mt); Mashonaland West, (6 078.17mt); Masvingo, 10 243.25mt; Matabeleland North, 3 215.13mt; Matabeleland South, 4 803.48mt; and Midlands, (7 845.30mt).
