Umzingwane, December 12, 2019 (New Ziana)-Four miners are feared dead after a mine shaft collapsed, trapping them underground early Tuesday at Esikhoveni mine in Umzingwane district, an official has said.

Rescue efforts were currently underway and one body had been retrieved by Wednesday afternoon.

A District Civil Protection Unit official confirmed the accident to New Ziana.

Mine manager Vasel Mpofu said the rescue mission was beset by challenges.

“Yesterday (Tuesday) the search continued until 8PM and we resumed this morning. We are however experiencing challenges,” he said without giving much detail.
