Harare, (New Ziana)- The Grain Marketing Board (GMB) has finally cleared outstanding payments to farmers for grain delivered during the 2023/24 marketing season, an official said on Monday. GMB chief executive officer Dr Edson Badarai told the Public Accounts Committee of Parliament that the parastatal no longer owes farmers for maize and small grains deliveries.

“In terms of maize deliveries, we fully paid for them. I would want to inform the nation that as of last week Friday, we received US$13 million for the farmers and ZiG115 million local currency, and we have already completed the payment of the USD, it will go a long way in terms of alleviating the strain that was now on the farmers to prepare for the summer season. So we believe that this will be a catalyst to productivity on the farms,” he said.

Dr Badarai dismissed reports that GMB still owes farmers for deliveries done more than one season ago. “There is no farmer from previous seasons who has not been paid. However, there are some farmers out there who could not have been paid for one or two reasons. We encourage them to come forward and they will be paid immediately,” he said. He said unfortunately GMB still owes farmers for wheat delivered.

“For the maize and traditional grains, we were around US$2.3 million so US$11 million was going to wheat farmers. So on wheat, we are now down to US$21 million. We believe that before the end of this month, we should have completed the payment. We encourage farmers to continue to deliver the wheat to GMB,” he said.

According to stastistics from the Agricultural Marketing Authority, as of November 1, 2024, Zimbabwean farmers had harvested 518 502 tons of wheat from 106 238 hectares. A total of 119 594 hectares were put under winter wheat this year compared to 91 000 hectares in 2023.
