Harare,(New Ziana) – Cabinet on Thursday approved the renaming of streets in the country’s cities and towns as well as renaming of buildings and government complexes in honour of respected living and fallen heroes.
Those honoured included revered local, regional and international icons.
Addressing a post Cabinet media briefing, Environment, Tourism and Hospitality Industry Minister, Mangaliso Ndlovu said the proposals had been presented by Vice President Kembo Mohadi, who chairs the Cabinet Committee on place names.
“Cabinet noted that through the process of naming every community of society defines its identity and culture, tells its history and espouses its values, beliefs, norms and world view,” Ndlovu said.
“Naming is also a social engagement tool that fosters understanding, peace and unity in diversity.”
In Harare, roads that have been renamed include Enteprise Road which is now known as Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa Road.
Selous Avenue will be known as John Landa Nkomo Avenue, while Cameron Street will be Joseph Msika Street.
Kirkman Drive has been renamed in honour of Solomon Mujuru, while Livingstone Avenue has been renamed after South African icon Oliver Tambo.
The late former Cuban leader, Fidel Castro and the late former Soviet Union leader, Leonid Brezhnevh were respectively honoured with the renaming of former Charter Road and Five Avenue in their honour.
In Bulawayo, Sixth Avenue will be known as Emmerson Mnangagwa Way while Ninth Avenue has been renamed Simon Muzenda Avenue.
Twelfth Avenue is now Joseph Msika Avenue, Fourth Avenue now John Land Nkomo Avenue and Fifth Avenue was renamed Maria Msika Avenue.
Tenth Avenue is now Nikita Mngena Avenue, Collenbrander Avenue renamed LookOut Masuku Avenue and former 23rd Avenue is now Jairos Jiri Avenue.
Several government buildings and composite offices were also remaned with Harare Central Hospital rechristened Sally Mugabe Central Hospital and the police’s Tomlison Depot now Chimoio Camp Depot.
