Harare (New Ziana) – Government says it will only contract established and reputable companies to supply materials needed for the Covid-19 national response.

Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Monica Mutsvangwa said the stance by government follows the mushrooming of shadowy companies aiming to take advantage of the Covid-19 pandemic to secure lucrative government supply contracts but without capacity to deliver.

But, she said government was aware of such schemes and would not be blindsided.

“Cabinet notes with concern the mushrooming of briefcase companies which are being involved in the tendering process for Covid-19 supplies. Government will leave no stone unturned in ensuring that such unscrupulous business elements are sifted out,” she said in her post Cabinet briefing.

“Reputable and established companies (will) be contracted to supply Covid-19 materials.”

Mutsvangwa said government was determined to win the battle against Covid-19 and that the country’s low infection rate was a source of inspiration.

Zimbabwe has 37 recorded cases of Covid-19 including 12 recoveries and four deaths.

“The country should not take this apparent low rate as a sign to be complacent, but should continue with a unity of purpose and determination exhibited thus far,” she said.

She said further Covid-19 prevention measures had been adopted by Cabinet.

These, she said, included a risk based approach testing for workforce in industry and commerce and other sectors of the economy and doing PCR testing on those who need it and based on proper sampling.

“(Cabinet also agreed to) the establishment of a Covid-19 Command Centre headed by the Civil Protection Unit at Crisis Centre, Makombe Building to direct and coordinate all Covid-19 operations.”

Meanwhile, Mutsvangwa said government had established quarantine centres at all ports of entry into the country.

“A total of 3 611 returning residents have been compulsorily quarantined as at 11 May 2020,” she said.

“Returnees who offer to pay for themselves (should) be allowed to do so on condition that the facility is secure and subject to inspection by health and security officials.”
