Harare, (New Ziana) – Harare Mayor Jacob Mafume on Monday urged stakeholders to work with the local authority for the successful implementation of the city’s Master Plan, which seeks to transform the capital into a thriving, sustainable, and livable metropolis.

Addressing residents, town planners, construction industry leaders, the business community, and other key stakeholders, Mafume emphasized the importance of the master plan in guiding the long-term development of the city.

“This master plan is not just a collection of policies and proposals, it is a blueprint for the Harare we aspire to become: a city that works for all its people, that thoughtfully balances growth and environmental stewardship, and that positions itself as an economic powerhouse and regional hub,” he said.

Key priorities outlined in the master plan include enhancing the city’s transportation network, with a focus on expanding public transit and improving road infrastructure.

“We must break free from the car-centric model that has dominated urban planning for far too long. By investing in public and active transportation, we will reduce congestion, and make Harare a more accessible and livable city.”

Mafume also pointed out the plan’s emphasis on sustainable and affordable housing, pledging to work closely with the construction industry to deliver a diverse range of residential options.

To the business community, he outlined economic development strategies aimed at attracting investment, fostering entrepreneurship, and leveraging Harare’s position as a regional hub.

“We will streamline processes, improve infrastructure, and create targeted programs to support local businesses and entrepreneurs. By doing so, we will cement Harare’s reputation as a dynamic, forward-looking city that is open for business.”

He also stressed the importance of environmental sustainability, highlighting the plan’s emphasis on green spaces, renewable energy, and climate change adaptation.

“Harare’s natural assets are the lifeblood of our community, and we have a responsibility to protect them for generations to come. Through sustainable urban planning and a steadfast commitment to environmental stewardship, we will ensure that Harare remains a livable, resilient city in the face of a changing climate,” he said

“This is a pivotal moment for Harare, if we work together with all of you – the residents, the experts, the business leaders – we will build the city of the future, one that serves as a model for urban development across Africa and beyond.”

The master plan serves as a guiding document for the city’s long-term development, helping to coordinate various departments, inform decision-making, and ensure the community’s vision for the future is realized over time.
