Matabeleland North will play a significant role in the upcoming World Children’s Day celebrations, providing the bulk of the expected 7,470 children who will grace the event.

According to the organising committee, while 450 children will come from the other eight provinces of Zimbabwe, Matabeleland North is set to contribute 7,020 participants.

Of the children from Matabeleland North, approximately 1,200 will come from the six districts within the province, while 5,820 will be from Hwange District alone. This impressive turnout reflects the community’s commitment to engaging with important social issues affecting children.

The children will be accommodated at Rest Camp and several local schools that have been designated as temporary villages for the duration of the event. These facilities will provide a safe and nurturing environment, ensuring that the children can focus on the activities and educational programmes planned for them.

This year’s commemoration comes at a crucial time, coinciding with the government’s efforts to combat drug and substance abuse among children.

“Capture them young, and they will never depart,” emphasised Charles Ndlovu, a child rights activist. “This is the appropriate time to educate these young stars about social ills, and I believe this initiative will help redirect them toward healthier choices in life.”

Zimbabwe, in partnership with UNICEF, is hosting children from seven Southern African Development Community (SADC) countries: Botswana, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Zambia, and Zimbabwe as hosts. This regional gathering aims not only to celebrate children’s rights but also to foster a spirit of unity and collaboration among the participating countries.

World Children’s Day is observed every November 20, but the celebrations will take place tomorrow at Baobab Primary School. This scheduling choice ensures that the festivities do not interfere with ongoing learning and examination processes, allowing students to participate fully without compromising their education.

The event promises to be a vibrant celebration filled with educational activities, entertainment, and discussions aimed at empowering children and raising awareness about their rights. By bringing together young people from various backgrounds, the organizers hope to create lasting connections and reinforce the message that investing in the well-being of children is critical for the future of the region.
