Bulawayo, (Bulawayo) – A total of six bikers from Kenya passed through Bulawayo as they navigate the African continent under the project “Around Africa Motorcycle Trip.”

The riders entered the country on Thursday through Victoria Falls from Livingstone, Zambia, and were welcomed by Bulawayo mayor David Coltart, Kenyan ambassador to Zimbabwe, Stella Munyi, residents, and government officials.

The bikers left the city on Friday en-route to Francistown in Botswana as part of their journey.

They are celebrating Kenya’s 60 years of independence from British colonial rule which it attained in 1963.

The group comprises Nicholas Kiplangat Korir (team leader), Ndiritu Moses Gameni, Kairu Mark Mbuthia, Kiumbe Sammy Mwongera, Nyamunga Leonard Omondi, and Gari Havana Edna Nimboro, the only female biker. Speaking on the occasion to welcome the bikers, Munyi said Kenya’s 60 years of independence is a story of resilience, growth, and adaptability.

“As part of the celebrations to commemorate this diplomatic journey, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs engaged in various activities in December 2024 ahead of Kenya’s Independence Day, celebrated on December 12 each year. ”

The major activities included the launch of a reviewed Kenya Foreign Policy and Strategic Plan, the Foreign Service Academy, and an Open Day for the general public to interact with the Ministry and learn about the services it provides.

“Additionally, the Ministry commissioned the Around Africa Motorcycle Riders. The motorcycle riders present with us today commenced their journey from Marsabit in Northern Kenya on December 12, 2024, traversing through Ethiopia, Djibouti, and back to Nairobi, completing the first leg on January 9, 2025,” she explained.

Munyi added that the second leg began from Mombasa, Kenya’s coastal resort city, on January 18.

“They have already navigated through Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia, and are now in Zimbabwe. They will proceed to Francistown, Botswana, and then to Pretoria, South Africa, through Maseru, Lesotho, before concluding their journey in Cape Town, South Africa. This part of the journey completes their second leg before commencing the third leg later in February 2025,” she said.

She commended the bikers for their patriotism, dedication, and fearlessness as they traversed challenging terrain across borders.

“It takes hard work, selflessness, and resilience to engage in this noble yet grueling exercise in honor of Kenya’s 60th diplomatic journey.

Speaking on the same occasion, team leader Korir said the primary reason for their adventurous tour was to raise funds to sponsor disadvantaged high school students in Kenya. “The reason we are doing this is because we run a scholarship fund that educates high school students.

Currently, we support 1 000 students, and as a team, we want to increase that number and ensure it continues indefinitely,” he said.

Besides raising funds, Korir emphasized that the trip is meant to celebrate the unity of African people. “The trip is meant to celebrate our brotherhood as Africans and who we are as we ride around the continent,” he said.

Also speaking at the same occassion, Coltart said the visit by the riders to the country’s second largest city was a positive gesture that would help market it as a prime tourist destination.
