Harare(New Ziana) – Local companies have started joining en masse government-led national efforts to combat Covid-19, after the first case was registered in the country two weeks ago.

The country now has five Covid-19 confirmed cases, including one resultant death.

In a statement, BOC Gases – the main supplier of gas which is critical in Covid-19 treatment – assured the nation it had sufficient stocks and would prioritise health institutions.

Oxygen is crucial in the treatment of Covid-19 patients, especially for those who develop serious respiratory problems.

“Please note that BOC Gases Zimbabwe will strictly prioritise medical oxygen supply for the treatment of state and private hospital patients who have contracted Covid-19 and those patients on existing medically prescribed oxygen therapies in line with medical prescriptions issued by a medical doctor,” the company said.

“BOC Gases Zimbabwe will not supply medical oxygen to individuals who are not medically prescribed oxygen therapies or may want medical oxygen as means of stand-by in case they may require it a later stage.”

The company urged citizens to be responsible in order to tame the Covid-19 pandemic.

“BOC Gases is committed to meeting the healthcare needs of all Zimbabweans in both the public and the private sectors,” the company said.

Another company, Greenfuel – which manufactures ethanol for fuel blending – said it had started manufacturing an ethanol based hand sanitiser.

Sanitizers are in short supply in Zimbabwe and around the world because of high demand in the aftermath of Covid-19.

“In light of the recently declared national disaster over the Covid-19 pandemic and the severe shortages of hand sanitiser on both the local and international markets, Greenfuel has taken the decision to manufacture ethanol based hand sanitiser,” the company said.

“Greenfuel shall also be donating a consignment of hand sanitiser to the Ministry of Health and Child Care for onward distribution to hospitals, clinics and other civic institutions in order to help fight and curb the spread of Covid-19. The hand sanitiser will also be made available on the local market in bulk quantities next week.”

The hand sanitiser, Greenfuel said, will be manufactured in line with World Health Organisation standards and will be composed of 80 percent ethanol, 1.45 percent glycerol, 0.125 percent Hydrogen peroxide and 18.425 percent demineralised water.

The initiative by Greenfuel and BOC Gases is in addition to another private sector led initiative to refurbish two hospitals in Harare for the Covid-19 fight.

Fuel distributor, Sakunda Holdings will sink US$2.7 million to refurbish Rock Foundation Medical Centre and St Annes’ Hospital in Harare, to enable them to handle Covid-19 cases.

On its part, government has refurbished and equipped a number of health facilities in the country to handle Covid-19 cases.

Some of these are now Covid-19 specialised treatment centres.
