Harare, (New Ziana) –At least three minors succumbed to malaria while five died from common diarrhoea in Zimbabwe during the first week of this year, the Ministry of Health and Child Care has reported.

Malaria is a major public health issue in Zimbabwe with more than 5 million people at risk of contracting it each year.

While the number of reported cases has fluctuated in recent years, the country has made progress in reducing the incidence of the disease. Diarrhoea is also a common health issue in the country mainly among children under five.

The prevalence of diarrhoea in children under five has varied over the years but was 15 percent of total deaths in the country in 2019.

In its first weekly disease surveillance report for 2025, the MoHCC in posts on its official X account, said as of January 5, at least 3 deaths had been recorded out of 499 malaria cases reported.

The deaths were reported from Mutare district in Manicaland province with 52 cases, which translate to 10.4 percent being of children under 5 years of age. The highest number of reported cases were in Manicaland with 244, and Mashonaland Central where 110 cases were recorded.

During the same period, the MoHCC said five deaths were recorded from 5 977 common diarrhoea cases reported. The deaths were reported from Chipinge district (3) in Manicaland province and Sally Mugabe Hospital (2) in Harare Metropolitan province.

“Of the reported cases, 3 533 (39.9 percent) were from the under five years of age. The provinces that reported the highest number of cases were Mashonaland East (993) and Mashonaland Central (862). The cumulative figures for common diarrhoea are 5 977 cases and 5 deaths,” said the Ministry.

“455 dysentery cases and no deaths were reported this week. The provinces that reported the highest number of clinical dysentery cases were Mashonaland Central (98) and Mashonaland West (98). The cumulative figures for dysentery are 455 cases and 0 deaths.”
