Harare, (New Ziana) – For an attack on his sister during which a baby strapped on her back died, a Chipinge man has been jailed to an effective 10 years.
Kufakwevantu Chirigo (37) was convicted by the Chipinge Magistrates’ Court for attempted murder, but is yet to be tried at the High Court for the murder of his sister’s 18-month-old infant she had strapped on her back at the time he attacked her with a machete.
The National Prosecuting Authority said Chirigo was intoxicated when he had a domestic dispute with his sister during which he called her names and insisted that she return to her marital home with her children.
He assaulted her with a spanner numerous times on the hands. She ran and locked herself in one of the huts.
Chirigo broke the window and tried to get into the hut, forcing her to abandon the refuge for another brother’s house about 50m away. Chirigo caught up with her and struck her once on the neck.
He struck the 18-month-old infant which was strapped to her back with a machete resulting in the child’s death. He continued to strike her all over indiscriminately but she blocked the machete blows and sustained cuts on her wrists.
Meanwhile, Svodai Vhoko (34) and Sekai Tagara (37), have been ordered to do 175 hours of community service after they offered a US$10 bribe to a Chiredzi public prosecutor to try and secure the release of a man who was facing charges of burglary.
The two were initially sentenced to six months imprisonment but the Chiredzi Magistrates’ Court conditionally suspended one month for five years and the remaining five months on condition they completed 175 hours of community service.
The NPAZ said the women’s case is a reminder that bribery is a serious crime that undermines the integrity of the justice system.
