MBERENGWA – A 21-year-old man has been sentenced to 15 years in jail after he was convicted of raping a 17-year-old girl.

The accused of Chiungwani Village in Mberengwa, appeared at the Mberengwa Magistrates Court facing rape charges.

The court heard that on August 20, the complainant was home alone in the kitchen when she was approached by the accused who asked for water to drink and was given.

“The accused person held the complainant’s hand and ordered her to remove her clothes and she complied,” said the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe.

The accused then undressed and raped the complainant once and ran away.

The girl disclosed the rape ordeal to her mother who reported to the police leading to the man’s arrest.

Meanwhile, a 24-year-old woman appeared at the Gweru Magistrates Court for contravening the Children’s Act: Ill-treatment or Neglect of children and young persons.

The agreed facts are that on March 4, the complainant’s mother left her three-year-old girl with the aunt in Gweru and went to school in Shurugwi.

“On March 25, the accused person told the mother that the girl had fallen and hurt her face. The mother took her daughter to Shurugwi Hospital, where the doctor concluded that the injuries were not from a fall,” said the NPAZ.

The matter was reported to the police and a neighbour told police investigators that the accused person ill-treated the child.

The accused person was sentenced to six months in jail, of which three months were suspended for good behaviour. Three months were also suspended on condition that the accused person performs 105 hours of unpaid work.
