Umguza, (New Ziana) – The late former Vice President, Phelekezela Mphoko was laid to rest at his farm here at the weekend, an occasion graced by several top government officials.

He died last week in India where he was receiving medical treatment for an undisclosed illness.

He was 84, and was declared national hero. Matabeleland North Minister of State and Devolution, Richard Moyo, who represented President Emmerson Mnangagwa at the burial, described the late VP as someone who always prioritised national unity and peace in the country.

The late VP retired from government in 2017 after a lengthy service which included ambassadorships to various countries, among them Russia and South Africa. He had been unwell for sometime, but his illness was never disclosed.

“On behalf of his Excellency the President of the Republic of Zimbabwe and the chairperson of SADC, government, the people of Zimbabwe and on my own behalf, I extend our heartfelt condolences to the Mphoko family for this loss. May you all be comforted, your loss is felt by us all. I stand before you to pay tribute to the man who dedicated his life to the service of our motherland,” Moyo said.

“Mphoko’s legacy is built on his unwavering commitment to promoting national peace and reconciliation, fostering dialogue and understanding within our differences. The role he played in our county’s liberation struggle will never be forgotten. The seasoned diplomat, politician and former vice president Phelekezela Mphoko held various ambassadorial posts including being ambassador to Russia, Botswana and South Africa,” he added.

Moyo urged the public to emulate the late VP Mphoko’s commitment to peace and national unity, upon which the prosperity of the nation is anchored.

“We honour his memory by upholding the value he has put in unity, compassion and service to others. Finally as we lay the national hero to rest we say rest in peace comrade you have run your race, you have fought a good and remarkable fight and you will forever be remembered,” Moyo said.

The late VP was born on June 11, 1940 in Bubi district, Matabeleland North province.

He attended David Livingstone memorial school in Ndabazinduna, and later Mzilikazi High School in Bulawayo. He is survived by his wife Laurinda Mphoko, three children and three grandchildren.
