MARONDERA- The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) recently called upon drivers to be responsible on the road and prioritise the safety of travellers and promote road safety at all times.

The Police’s call followed a fatal road accident that occurred at the 33 km peg (Mutangadura area) along the Harare-Mutare highway last week.

Five people perished in the accident while 14 others were injured.

It was reported that Pardon Sungai (31), the driver of the truck which caused the accident initially fled from the scene but has since handed himself over to the police.

Sungai, who was travelling towards Mutare in the outer lane, reportedly encroached into the inner lane in which a Tenda bus was travelling in the same direction towards Mutare.

In trying to avoid colliding with the truck, the bus driver filtered into the oncoming lane where a Phils and Pats bus was coming from Mutare, leading to a collision of the two buses.

After realising that he had caused the accident, Sungai disappeared from the accident scene.

The ZRP confirmed through its X handle that Sungai has since surrendered himself to the police for the due process of the law to take place.

At the scene of accident, Chaminuka News managed to interview one of the survivors of the accident, Madzibaba Obert, who was on his way to church in Marondera and was clad in church garments.

He said that he believed that his church garments had saved him.

“God is powerful. I can hardly believe that I’m still alive. Imagine, I was trapped under the bus with my garments but came out fit and without any scratch. I am on my way to Marondera to attend a church service and I believe that my church garments saved me,” Madzibaba Obert said.
