Mutare, (Pungwe News-New Ziana) – A Mutare man from Murambi East low density suburb was recently severely bashed by three men on his way home after he failed to give them cigarettes.

Police confirmed the incident, and said they had arrested one of the suspects after a manhunt.

Manicaland province police spokesperson said Vandela Sibanda (20) was attacked near Zimra building along Herbert Chitepo road at night.

He said three robbers demanded cigarettes from Sibanda, but he gave them ZWL$2 instead, which incensed them because it was little.

“They demanded more but Sibanda could not offer. They started kicking him all over the body and assaulting him with fists,” said Chananda.

They robbed him of US$10 and a satchel which had clothes.

He reported the matter to Mutare Central Police station. After investigations, police arrested Jonathan Mutembedzi (29) but the other two suspects are still at large.

“As police we urge people not (to) walk in isolated places at night as they risk being attacked by robbers,” said the police spokesperson.
