Mutare (New Ziana)-A 28 year old woman from Mutare was recently arraigned before the courts for dumping her 10 year old child at her husbands’s girlfriend’s home in protest over lack of maintenance.

Nomatter Matanga appeared before magistrate Prisca Manhibi who remanded her in custody for sentence after she pleaded guilty to the charges of ill treatment of a minor.

Asked why she committed the offence, Matanga told the court that her husband had instructed her to bring the minor if she could not take care of him.

“I had to go and leave the child at his girlfriend’s place because he is not supporting the child,” said Matanga.

But magistrate Manhibi told her that she should have approached the courts for a maintenance order instead of leaving the child with a person who did not have legal rights over him.

Prosecutor Perseverance Masuku told the court that Matanga of Dangamvura Area 13 abandoned her 10 year old male child at Mercylin Maradzikwa’s home without food or extra clothes.

Muradzikwa later sought assistance and reported the matter to the police leading to Matanga`s arrest.
