    Over 1 000 malaria cases recorded in a week

    Harare, (New Ziana) – A total of 1 048 malaria cases
    and five deaths were reported countrywide during the week ending January
    19, 2025, the Ministry of Health and Child Care has said.

    In a weekly disease surveillance report, the Ministry said the malaria
    cases were recorded in Manicaland, Mashonaland West, Masvingo and Harare
    provinces.

    “1 048 malaria cases and five deaths were reported. The deaths were
    reported from Mutare District (1) in Manicaland, Sanyati District (1) in
    Mashonaland West, Chiredzi District (1) in Masvingo, Sally Mugabe
    Hospital (1) and Parirenyatwa Hospital (1) in Harare.

    “Of the reported cases, 131 (12.5 %) were from under five years of age.
    The provinces that reported the highest number of cases were Manicaland
    665 and Mash West 133. Cumulative figures for malaria cases for January
    are 2 186 and 9 deaths,” said the Ministry.

    During the week under review, seven anthrax cases were reported from
    Gokwe North and South Districts (1) in Midlands and Sanyati District (1)
    in Mash West. Cumulative figures for anthrax cases are 19 and zero
    deaths.

    Also according to the Ministry, during the week ending January 19, four
    new suspected measles cases were recorded across three provinces of
    Mashonaland West, Mashonaland East, and two in Harare Metropolitan
    Province.

    “Cumulative figures for suspected measles are 12 cases and no deaths,”
    said the Ministry.

    The new cases bring the cumulative number of suspected measles cases to
    12 since the beginning of the year, with no reported deaths.
