Harare, (New Ziana) – A prisoner released on Presidential Amnesty helped to have one of his former prison guards nabbed for theft involving ZAR4 500.
The former Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services (ZPCS) officer, Mpumelelo Dube (33) was jailed for five years by the Gwanda Magistrates’ Court for theft according to the National Prosecution Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ).
In an X post, NPAZ said Dube had on April 13 this year escorted a group of six inmates including the informant on a mission to offload goods at Matson Investments in Gwanda.
After offloading the goods, the complainant discovered that various groceries including 5 open view decoders were missing.
She did not report the matter but decided to conduct her own investigations first. The matter came to light on April 19 when a witness who was among the team of inmates, was granted Presidential Amnesty and went to inform the complainant that Dube was responsible for theft of the decoders.
A police report was made leading to Dube’s arrest and the recovery of the decoders. Total value stolen was ZAR4 500 and ZAR3 600 was recovered.
Dube will service an affective three years in jail after the magistrates’ court conditionally suspended two years of his prison term for five years.
