MUTARE – The Pfumvudza inputs distribution initiative is officially underway across all seven districts of Manicaland, to support about 459,000 households in enhancing food security and agricultural productivity.

The programme, which focuses on ecological farming practices, was launched in Buhera district, where officials outlined the distribution strategy and its benefits to local farmers.

The Pfumvudza initiative is designed to provide targeted support based on the ecological zones of the region. In Buhera, the launch event highlighted the goal of reaching 62,127 households, emphasising the importance of sustainable agriculture in combating food insecurity. The distribution plan is tailored to the specific needs of farmers in different regions, ensuring that they receive appropriate inputs for their ecological conditions.

Agricultural and Rural Development Advisory Services provincial director, Nhamo Mudada said the distribution of inputs was progressing well following the national launch of the Pfumvudza Programme in Buhera.

“The inputs distribution is already underway in different parts of Manicaland. In fact, distribution started immediately after the national launch of the Pfumvudza programme in Buhera and our expectations are that the District Development Coordinators (DDC’s) and their teams are seized with the distribution modalities in areas under their jurisdictions,” said Mudada.

In Chimanimani district, 34,182 households will benefit from the programme, while Makoni district is set to receive inputs for 96,689 households. The Mutare district, which includes the urban and peri-urban areas, has a target of 75,433 households. Chipinge district is also a significant beneficiary, with plans to reach 82,213 households. Mutasa district will see inputs distributed to 53,690 households, and Nyanga district will target 47,658 households.

Mudada added that the distribution of inputs is based on the ecological regions of Manicaland, with farmers in regions one and two receiving 10 kg of maize seed each. Those in region three will receive a reduced amount of 5 kg of maize seed due to the varying climatic conditions and soil fertility in that area. In regions four and five, which are characterised by drier conditions, beneficiaries will primarily receive traditional grains, again at 5kg per person.

This targeted approach reflects a commitment to ecological sustainability, encouraging farmers to adopt practices that align with their specific environmental conditions. By providing appropriate seeds and crops, the Pfumvudza initiative aims to enhance resilience against climate variability and improve overall agricultural yields.

As the distribution process begins, local agricultural extension officers are expected to play a crucial role in guiding farmers on best practices for planting and managing their crops. This support will be vital in ensuring that the inputs lead to successful harvests and improved food security in the region.

The Manicaland provincial target has been set at 84 613 hectares to drastically reduce the impacts of hunger and starvation exacerbated by climate change.

The Pfumvudza initiative has been met with enthusiasm among local farmers, many of whom are optimistic about the potential for improved yields and greater food self-sufficiency.

“We are grateful for this support. With the right seeds and guidance, we believe we can produce enough food for our families and even have some left to sell,” said one farmer from Buhera.
