Harare, (New Ziana) – The Zimbabwe Republic Police on Tuesday lauded villagers in Kondo, Uzumba district of Mashonaland East province for their bravery that led to the apprehension of eight suspected armed robbers.

National police spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the eight suspects had on October 20, teamed up with 10 others who are still at large, to rob a gold buyer, they suspected of being in possession of large sums of cash.

“The gang were driving a Toyota Hiace and were wielding three unknown types of pistols, a bolt cutter and hammers,” Ass Com Nyathi said.

“Upon arrivals at the complainant’s residence, the suspects purported they were law enforcement agents from Murewa, but later changed that (claiming) they were from Bindura and wanted to arrest illegal gold panners in Nyaguwe River.”

The suspects are said to have smashed windows and opened fire at the complainant’s home, who also returned fire using his registered firearm.

“Villagers were awakened by the noise and assisted the complainant to apprehend seven of the suspects and the other 10 fled into the nearby mountain and one of the suspects died during the fight with the villagers,” the police spokesman said.

He appealed for information that might lead to the arrest of the remaining suspects as investigations were still ongoing.
