Bulawayo (New Ziana) – Criminal activities in the Bulawayo Central Business District (CBD) are expected to decrease significantly following the installation of Closed-Circuit Television
(CCTV) cameras in several hotspots, marking the latest step towards embracing smart policing.
The move stems from a partnership between the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) and Safeguard Security, which aims to integrate advanced technology into the fight against crime.
Speaking during the launch of the CCTV project, national police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi described the partnership as a critical move in tackling urban crime.
“Policing is not static. Policing must evolve and keep pace with technological advancements,” he said.
Com Nyathi said the installation of CCTV cameras would significantly deter criminal activities, ensuring residents can carry out their daily activities in a safer environment.
“For a long time, we have been grappling with issues of crime, especially at night when people are vulnerable after leaving nightclubs or shopping centres. From what we have seen today, this will become a thing of the past. Criminal activities will be monitored 24/7 from a central control room, allowing for swift police response,” he assured.
The new surveillance system would also track vehicles involved in criminal activity, helping to restore order in the CBD, he said.
Com Nyathi urged other local authorities to emulate Bulawayo, saying in addition to enhancing safety, the initiative also strengthens the peace and stability that the country enjoys.
Speaking at the same occasion, Minister of State for Provincial Affairs Judith Ncube expressed great excitement at the project, highlighting the importance of the technology to law enforcement.
“Developed countries have long embraced these systems, and as Bulawayo province we should not be left behind. This initiative will not only reduce crime but also create a safer environment for all,” she said.
She also stressed the importance of public-private partnerships (PPPs) in maintaining security and implored stakeholders across the city to join forces in the fight against crime.
Safeguard Technical Manager for the southern region, Temba Chakamanga, reflected on the company’s longstanding relationship with ZRP, emphasizing their mutual goal of creating a crime-free environment.
While he did not disclose the specific locations where the CCTV cameras would be installed, Chakamanga assured that key hotspots would be under constant surveillance, enhancing security throughout the city.
According to crime experts, the installation of CCTV cameras has proven effective in both preventing crime and aiding in the resolution of incidents.
Surveillance systems provide real-time monitoring and recording, which can be crucial in solving cases of theft, robbery, and other offenses.
