President Emmerson Mnangagwa on Wednesday met Zimbabwe’s ambassador designates at State House before they leave to commence their official duties in various capitals across the world.
President Mnangagwa appointed new ambassadors drawn from different
sectors to replace those who had either died, recalled or retired.
Among those who attended the Wednesday meeting included Lieutenant
Generals Anslem Sanyatwe and Douglas Nyikayaramba who have been posted
to Tanzania and Mozambique respectively.
Former MDC –MP for Mabvuku Tafara James Maridadi who will represent
Harare in Senegal, Abigail Shonhiwa and Professor Charity Manyeruke were
also in attendance.
Speaking after the meeting, acting Foreign Affairs and International
Trade Minister Amon Murwira said the new envoys were expected to
represent Zimbabwe well.
He said they were also expected to advance Zimbabwe’s economic and
political re-engagement agenda.
“We have our independence, we have our land but we need to move to
prosperity, based on that we are saying they go, they make sure that
Zimbabwe’s economic foundations are strong, Zimbabwe’s economic
relations are strengthened. That is the main mission that they have,” he
said.
Since the coming in of the new dispensation, Zimbabwe has embarked on a
vigorous engagement and re-engagement agenda to mend and strengthen
relations with the global community.
The agenda has received massive international goodwill as the international community continues to embrace the country, whose relations with the West in particular had soured due to differences over the land reform program.
The differences led to, among other things, the imposition of economic
sanctions against Zimbabwe by countries opposed to the agrarian reforms.
But in a show of confidence in the new administration, most Western
countries have re-opened avenues to rekindle the long lost relationship
with Zimbabwe.
For example, last month, Zimbabwe and the European Union (EU) launched
a formal political dialogue framework as a direct result of the
re-engagement agenda after years of frosty relations.- New Ziana
