Bulawayo, (New Ziana) – President Emmerson Mnangagwa has urged churches to instill an enterprenuerial spirit in their congregrants, in addition to religious values, in order to drive production and economic growth in the country.

He was speaking at the commissioning of a 10 500-seat multi-functional auditorium of the Harvest House International (HHI) Church here. The complex has seminar halls, a gym, a food court, a medical centre and various other commercial facilities.

“Going forward, I exhort you to scale up initiatives not only to inculcate Godly values and worth ethics, but also spur production and productivity among your congregants towards economic prosperity as well as higher quality of life in our motherland,” President Mnangagwa said.

“We must individually and collectively play our part towards socio-economic development, modernisation and industrialisation of our motherland, Zimbabwe and the great continent of Africa. That responsibility lies primarily with us.

“The Lord blesses the work of our hands. He establishes us and gives us power to prosper. We have a biblical duty to work and be fruitful,” he said.

In doing so, he said churches were assured of strong support from government. He reiterated government’s view of the church as an important and indispensable sector in various nation-building roles and responsibilities, including intercessions for leaders in positions of governmental authority.

“As a predominantly Christian nation we count on the churches to help strengthen upright moral living and a God-fearing society. You are thus called upon to deliberately assist on the ongoing programmes to reach out, specifically to the youths as we fight the vices of drug and substance abuse,” President Mnangagwa said.

He praised HHIC’s outreach programmes at national tertiary institutions of higher education, including the National University of Science and Technology (NUST), Bulawayo Polytechnic, the University of Zimbabwe, Hillside Teachers College, and Mpilo School of Nursing, among others, describing them as highly commendable and appreciated.

“These must also serve to foster unity, peace, love, harmony and great social cohesion in our young adults while improving both their physical and spiritual health,” he said.

He urged the church to leverage new media, ICTs, and digitization to reach people from all walks of life.

“Undoubtedly the world has become very complex and is being impacted both positively and negatively, by the digitisation, ICT and diverse media platforms. “These have exposed our communities, from children to adults, to a multiplicity of information.

This gives impetus for the church to reach out to people of all walks of life, using new media,” he said. Speaking at the same occasion, the President of The Evangelical Fellowship of Zimbabwe, Never Muparutsa, praised the government for fostering an environment that enables churches to operate freely in the country.

“We appreciate the government for creating a conducive environment that supports the growth of the church. The construction of this building and the expansion of the church in the country are achievements we take pride in and wholeheartedly commend,” he said.
