Harare, (New Ziana) -President Emmerson Mnangagwa has handed over more than 360 000 new land title deeds to A1 farmers and a further 23 500 to A2 farmers who benefitted from the land reform program.

Speaking at the handover ceremony held at his Precabe Farm in Kwekwe, the Midlands province on Friday, President Mnangagwa said land tenure security is critically important for economic growth and development as it encourages investment, improves agricultural production and productivity, as well as lifting many out of poverty. He urged all financial institutions to accept the deeds in order to improve farmer access to finance and capital, which is critical for production.

“Land tenure security is critically important to Zimbabwe’s economic growth and development. With secure land tenure, our farmers can access credit facilities, purchase inputs, and hire labour, ultimately increasing their yields and incomes,” he said.

President Mnangagwa said the tenure document is the ultimate empowerment tool for farmers, adding that it will preserve security and spur investment for accelerated livelihoods upliftment and economic development.

He said the handover of the title deeds, is a testament to Government commitment to empower the estimated 23 500 A2 farmers and 360 000 A1 farmers.

“As you are aware, the land vests in the President on behalf of the State. The State is, therefore, transferring the land to each holder of a valid land tenure document. This new Tenure System will be the ultimate anchor of our land reform programme,” he said.

President Mnangagwa challenged the beneficiaries to use the title deeds to defend the revolution, unlock investment and increase production, productivity, profitability, viability and sustainability to accelerate agricultural transformation.

He said the government is charting a new transformative and inclusive development agenda encapsulated in the National Development Strategy 1 (NDS 1) which he said is consistent with the collective aspirations and determination of the people of Zimbabwe to become an empowered and prosperous upper middle-income society by 2030.

It is through such relentless pursuit that the government is determined to deliver broad-based transformation, wealth creation and provision of economic opportunities for all Zimbabweans, leaving no one and no place behind, he said.

He said the land holds the country’s deep historical significance as its forebears fought tirelessly for the right to keep this land in the First Chimurenga and the Second Chimurenga reclaimed it in 1980 when the nation attained Independence.
