    President Mnangagwa pays condolences to Malawi

    Harare, (New Ziana) – President Emmerson Mnangagwa has sent a condolence message to his Malawian counterpart Dr Lazarus Chakwera following the death of that country’s Vice President Saulos Chilima, former First Lady Shanil Muluzi and eight other people in a plane crash on Monday.

    Chilima, Muluzi and the eight other passengers died when a military aircraft they were travelling on crashed into a mountain in the Chikangawa forest after failing to land at the Mzuzu International Airport, about 380 km north of the capital, Lilongwe due to bad weather.

    “It is with a profound sense of shock and sadness, that I received the devastating news on the fatal aircraft crash, that claimed the lives of the Vice President of the Republic of Malawi, Honourable Saulos Klaus Chilima, as well as the former First Lady of Malawi, Ms. Shanil Muluzi nee Dzimbiri, amongst other deceased Malawian patriots,” President Mnangagwa said.

    “On behalf of the government and people of the Republic of Zimbabwe, and, on my own behalf, I wish to extend to you, and, through you Your Excellency, to the Government and the people of the Republic of Malawi, as well as the families of the deceased, our heartfelt condolences and deep sorrow. We wish you fortitude on your road to recovery from this tragedy.”

    President Mnangagwa said the late Dr Chilima will forever be remembered for his selfless efforts in promoting the bi-lateral relations between Malawi and Zimbabwe.

    The plane was on a short flight from the capital, Lilongwe, to the northern city of Mzuzu for the funeral of a former government Ministerwhen it went missing on Monday morning.

    The government of Malawi has released the names of the people who perished in the aircraft plane with the VP as Lukas Kapheni, Chisomo Chimaneni, Gloria Mtukule, Shanil Dzimbiri, Dan Kanyemba, Abdul Lapukeni, Colonel Sambalopa, Major Selemani, and Major Aidin.

    President Chakwera on Tuesday declared a state funeral and 21 days of mourning honour of the late Chilima after the wreckage of the plane in which he was with the other nine passengers was discovered without any survivors.
