Bulawayo,  (New Ziana) – A security guard was shot and critically injured while attempting to escape from armed robbers who targeted the service station he was guarding.

Bulawayo province police spokesperson, assistant inspector Nomalanga Msebele said the security guard is currently admitted at Mpilo Hospital, where his condition is reported to be critical.

According to Musabele, on December 10 at around 9:00 PM, a 35-year-old female petrol attendant was on duty with two colleagues when two masked suspects approached her, pretending to buy fuel with an empty metal container.

One of the suspects, armed with a firearm, ordered his accomplice to shoot the security guard, who had drawn his rifle in defence.

“The security guard tried to run away and was shot in the back. He fell to the ground, and the suspects disarmed him of his revolver,” Msebele said.

“The suspects then manhandled the attendants and force-marched them to their offices, demanding cash and valuables.

They took US$681 in cash and their cellphones. The suspects fired another shot into the air before disappearing into the darkness with the revolver,” she said.

She no arrests have yet been made in the case, which comes a few months after another brazen armed robbery in the city in which a bank lost over US$4 million.

“The security guard sustained a gunshot wound and was referred to Mpilo Hospital for medical attention, and his condition is serious. We urge petrol attendants not to keep large sums of money on themselves but to deposit their cash in safes,” Msebele said.

“We are appealing for information that may lead to the arrest of the two suspects who robbed a fuel garage in Kelvin, Bulawayo,”she said.

In a similar incident, police are investigating an armed robbery that occurred at a Liquor wholesaler situated along Khami Road in Kelvin North. In this case, Msebele said suspects armed with an unidentified rifle entered the yard by scaling the durawall.

“On December 10, at around 8:30 PM, seven suspects armed with an unidentified rifle jumped over the durawall and confronted the security guard standing by the main gate, demanding to know where the cash was kept.

“He failed to respond out of fear and quickly ran outside the gate. While fleeing, he heard a gunshot and continued running towards the police station. Along the way, he discovered he had been hit with an unknown object and was bleeding from the forehead,” said Msebele.

As the suspects made their way to the warehouse, they met a general employee offloading liquor from a truck and assaulted him with an unknown object to the back of the head.

“The suspects entered the warehouse, assaulted several workers, and fired gunshots, ordering all employees to lie down, which they complied with.

“They took US$521 and ZAR 200, then loaded full bottles of whisky into a satchel before fleeing through the dispatch entrance. A police report was made, but no arrests have been made,” Msebele said.

“As police, we urge the business community not to keep large sums of money on the (business) premises but to bank their cash after closing hours.

“We also appeal to anyone with information that may lead to the arrest of the suspects to report to the nearest police station,” she said.

Police have launched a major crackdown on crime in Bulawayo, and recently arrested an eight-member gang responsible for a series of armed robberies targeting filling stations in and around the city.

They face ten counts of armed robbery involving the theft of approximately USD $5,000 and ZAR 120,000.
