Vumba (New Ziana)-Two pupils from the Vumba, Manicaland province died on the spot while another one died on the way to the Mutare Provincial Hospital after a speeding driver lost control of his vehicle, veered off the road and hit them while they were walking to school.

Manicaland deputy police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Luxson Chananda said the incident occurred at the 28 km peg along the Mutare-Vumba road around 7 am last Friday.

Asst Insp Chananda identified the pupils as Micayler Mapuranga a female (7), Kelvin Mwanase (5) and Raymond Matondo (7) who died on the way to hospital.

He said Kanganwai Sombreiro (39) of Mountain Lodge was driving a grey Toyota Wish along the Mutare-Vumba road towards the popular Leopard Rock Hotel with six passengers on board.

The Toyota Wish belonged to Paul Mumhazhi of Nyamunokoza village, under chief Mutasa.

“On approaching the 28 km peg, Sombreiro lost control of the vehicle, veered off the road to the right side and hit three children who were walking along the road killing two on the spot,” said Asst Insp Chananda.

He said Sombreiro and the six passengers sustained minor injuries and were taken to Mutare General Hospital where they were treated and discharged.

The matter was reported to Mutare Rural police station who attended the scene.

Bodies of the deceased were taken to Mutare Provincial Hospital for post mortem and their next of kin were informed.

“The vehicle had a shattered windscreen and it was taken to the Vehicle Inspection Department Mutare and investigations are still in progress,” said Asst Insp Chananda.

He urged motorists to exercise extreme caution when driving.
