Harare, (New Ziana) -Stakeholders in the housing delivery sector should partner with the government to provide decent and affordable homes to the people, a senior official has said. Special Advisor to the President responsible for monitoring implementation of Government programs, Jorum Gumbo, said this after touring the Glaudina Flats under construction in the capital.
He said stakeholders should complement and not wait for the Government alone to provide housing to the people.
“In forging ahead towards Vision 2030, I must emphasize the importance of partnerships for the success of the various housing and development initiatives. Achieving the ambitious goal of becoming an upper- middle-income economy requires collective effort, with the government working hand-in-hand with private sector players, financial institutions, international development partners, and local communities,” he said.
“Only when every Zimbabwean has access to appropriate shelter can we boldly proclaim that indeed, we left no place and no one behind.” Gumbo said the government has implemented a range of strategic interventions to respond effectively to the housing and spatial planning challenges facing the nation.
He said recognizing the urgency of addressing the housing backlog, which currently stands at over 1 million units, the government has taken decisive steps to accelerate the development of affordable, sustainable, and properly planned housing solutions across the country. These efforts, he said, are aimed at meet the growing demand as well as to uphold the dignity and well-being of the people across the country. The Glaudina Flats, which are specifically designed to cater for the low-income to middle income groups, are one notable example of such initiatives.
“This project embodies the Government’s commitment to inclusive development by ensuring access to decent housing for all socio-economic groups, thereby fostering equity and improving the quality of life for many Zimbabweans,” said Gumbo.
