MARONDERA– Police in Mashonaland East last week recovered nine Boer goats that had been stolen from Colandria Farm in Beatrice.

Provincial police spokesperson Inspector Simon Chazovachiyi confirmed the recovery and said a manhunt has since been launched for the suspect.

He said on January 19 this year at around 2am, police officers on car patrol noticed a white Nissan AD van parked by the roadside at the 58km peg along the Harare-Masvingo highway, towards the capital. On approaching the vehicle and an unknown man disembarked from the van and walked towards the police vehicle, which had parked on the opposite side of the road.

“The officers inquired about what he was up to and the suspect claimed to have experienced a breakdown. However, when it was indicated that his vehicle would be searched, the suspect fled into the nearby bush. The police then checked inside the car and discovered nine Boer goats.”

The vehicle was recovered and the goats were taken to ZRP Beatrice. On the same date, around 3am, the farm manager at Colandria Farm discovered that someone had cut the security fence to enter into the goat pen and that the goats were missing.

It is reported that at 11am, Onias Sanangura (44) who is the farm owner saw photos of the goats that had been sent by the police on a farmers’ WhatsApp group. Sanangura then sent his farm manager to Beatrice Police Station, where she made a report and identified the livestock.

The value of the goats was US$4 000 and all were recovered.

Inspector Chazovachiyi urged farmers to take pro-active measures to protect their livestock.

“We advise farmers to brand or ear-tag their cattle and goats to prevent theft and facilitate identification. Additionally, farmers must join neighborhood watch committees that patrol their areas and safeguard their livestock. They should also report stock theft cases early to increase the chances of recovery and apprehending the perpetrators,” the provincial police spokesperson said.
