In a bizarre incident that has left the community of Victoria Falls in shock, an 18-year-old teenager has been arrested on suspicion of murdering his 34-year-old stepfather. The case has garnered significant attention, highlighting issues of family conflict and violence.

According to Matabeleland North police spokesperson Glory Banda, the grim discovery was made on November 4, when the deceased was found hanging from a 1.8-meter tree in the Truck Stop area. Authorities reported that there was blood on the back of his head, raising questions about the circumstances leading to his death.

The conflict reportedly began when the stepfather, identified as Trust, was drunk started insulting the accused’s mother and sister. The young man intervened, asking Trust to stop his verbal abuse. However, Trust not only refused to heed his request but also retaliated with insults directed at the teenager. In a moment of heated emotion, the accused picked up a log and struck Trust multiple times—first on the head and then on various parts of his body.

After the assault, Trust sought refuge at a neighbour’s house, where he informed them about the altercation with his stepson. The neighbour advised him to spend the night in his car to avoid further confrontation, a suggestion that underscores the tension within the household.

Tragically, the following morning, Trust’s lifeless body was discovered by a 14-year-old boy around 6am, hanging from a tree in the Truck Stop area. The shocking nature of the incident has sent ripples through the local community, raising concerns about domestic violence and its devastating consequences.

Banda confirmed that an investigation is ongoing, with police working to piece together the events that led to this tragedy. A post-mortem has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death, which will reveal whether it was a result of the assault or the hanging itself.

Local leaders and organisations need to address the underlying issues related to substance abuse and conflict resolution to prevent such tragedies in the future. The incident will continue to unfold with many awaiting further details from law enforcement and the judicial process.
