MARONDERA– Three former St Mary’s High School Form Four students lost their lives in a tragic traffic accident after a kombi in which they were travelling in overturned at Chizema Shops, 15 km from their school in Hwedza.

St Mary’s High School Development Committee (SDC) chairman Passmore Nyasha said expressed his condolences to the grieving families and their friends, saying it was a difficult period for the school.

“The accident occurred on January 22 in the afternoon. Reports are that the former Form Four students were on their way to collect their results. There were about 16 of them, including a parent. Save for one, all of them were seriously injured after the kombi overturned. The deceased passed on at the hospital.

“This is a terrible loss and a difficult time for the school. As parents’ representatives who were present at the school before this happened, we witnessed the admission of the students at the hospital,” Nyasha said.

The SDC chairman thanked hospital staff for quickly attending to the injured students and helping them in the critical timeline.

He said: “We would like to thank the hospital staff for dedicating all their efforts to saving the lives of our children and that of our fellow parent who was also on board that kombi. We also thank the responsible authorities, the entire teaching staff and the students’ body for promptly responding when the news filtered in at the school. They showed very serious attachment to their former schoolmates.”

The school later on released a statement advising parents that the collection of results had shifted from the school to Scout Hall in Harare due to the tragedy.

“As a result, we have decided to shift the results collection venue to Harare at the Scout Hall where we usually do our fee payment clearance. Clearance service and Lower Six enrolment will be available at the same venue starting,” reads the statement.

In another accident confirmed by the police, a head-on accident that involved a Zebra Kiss bus, which had 27 passengers and a motorcycle rider at the one-kilometer peg along Mapombo-Gozi Road in Murehwa resulted in the deaths of the motorcycle rider and a passenger.

The bodies of the victims were taken to All Souls Mission Hospital mortuary for post-mortem.

The police warned all motorcyclists and their passengers to refrain from riding without helmets, saying this practice is against the law, further warning that those found violating this regulation will be arrested.
