MARONDERA- Son to the brother of legendary musician and national hero Oliver Mtukudzi, Calvin ‘Tuku Shaa’ has hinted on finally churning his latest album after failing to do so last year.

Early last year, Calvin made assurances that the album titled Husve Kusve would be released in the first few weeks of last year before he faced some logistical challenged that forced him to shelf the plan.

Last week, he told Chaminuka that plans are at an advanced stage to unleash the album that will contain six tracks, in March.

“We are now good to go. The plan was to release this album early last year but we faced some challenges that made us to re-organise. The good thing is we managed to re-do some of the songs as we realised that it could take us another year before doing what we had intended to do in the first place,” Calvin said.

According to the Marondera-based Afro-Jazz artist, the Husve Kusve album will contain songs such as Mwana Chipo, Duku (Doek) for Tuku, Kugarisana, Shiri Ine Muririro Wayo, Kurarama Nehurema and the title track itself.

Clavin explained the inspiration behind the album’s title track.

“Most of the songs on the album are self-explanatory except, of course, phrase Husve Kusve which can be better understood by people who understand the Korekore dialect. It means that most big things are beautiful, just like the album itself. I say so because it contains long tracks that are educative and entertaining. All the songs teach people about what happens in our everyday lives as Africans,” he said.

He has been holding live shows and hope to collaborate with established musicians in future productions.

“Backed by my band, we have been holding numerous live shows and our performances have endeared us to music followers. We have been hired, mostly at private functions where we have shown our mettle. However, I would like to make it clear that I am engaging a handful of seasoned artists, with the aim of producing and releasing collaborative songs. That might take long but I am hopeful of making a breakthrough,” Calvin said.

Organisers of the annual Mashonaland East Provincial Agricultural Show Society (MEPASS), he added, should make it a habit to give local artistes a platform to perform whenever such exhibitions that draw massive crowds, are held in Marondera.

“As artistes, we need exposure and I feel that it the duty of the organisers of our provincial show to ensure that the majority of musicians from this province are allocated slots as that helps to pull them closer to local music followers. It pains to see mostly Harare-based artistes being given priority at such platforms,” Calvin who wishes to be recognised as a successful international artist in the next three years, said.

With four albums under his belt up to date, Calvin, who was inspired by the legendary Oliver to take music seriously, released his first one titled Kukungura in 2013. His other three albums include Tuku Shaa, Kupupura and Manatsiro.
