Harare, (New Ziana) The United Nations (UN) secretary general’s special envoy for road safety Jean Todt on Tuesday paid a courtesy call on President Emmerson Mnangagwa at the State House.
He told the media soon after meeting the President that issues discussed concerned enforcing road safety measures in order to avoid unnecessary loss of lives in traffic accidents.
Todt said statistics were worrying and the younger generation were needlessly ending their lives because of the ‘thrills of speed’
“As the UN, we are concerned with the number of road carnages occuring on the roads across the globe and Zimbabwe is not spared.
“In the meeting with the President, we talked about how road safety measures can be enforced in order to bring sanity on the roads,” he said.
Todt said it was pleasing that President Mnangagwa assured that the government will work closely with UN agencies and other partners who are in the fight against road carnages.
Minister of Transport and Infrastructural Development Felix Mhona said transport operators especially those in public service should observe road regulations and those found on the wrong side will be penalized.
He revealed that the government was currently crafting a statutory instrument to curb road accidents.
Mhona said government was also improving road infrastructure as a way of curbing vehicle accidents.
