CHIREDZI – RESIDENTS of Chiredzi are alarmed at the rise in the number of muggings linked to unfinished houses in new suburbs.
The sites of muggings are Miyee, Shineplus, Croco Extension, and areas behind closed cemeteries. These incomplete structures are reportedly turning into hideouts for thieves, posing a significant threat to the safety of community.
Naison Manyadze, senior resident, says that he is really worried, adding: “Most of the uncompleted stands have now become hiding places for thieves and those conducting illegal activities, which has had a negative impact on the growth of our community.”
His apprehension reflects a growing unease among residents who fear for their safety, especially those returning home late at night.
Recent reports indicate a disturbing rise in muggings, particularly targeting individuals who drop off at Croco Motors and Lyonnais after dark. Many of these victims use shortcuts through the unfinished houses, unwittingly exposing themselves to danger. The lack of adequate street lighting and the isolation of these areas further exacerbate the issue, making it easier for criminals to operate unnoticed.
The local council has acknowledged the existence of laws aimed at ensuring the completion of residential developments within a given timeframe. However, these regulations have been relaxed due to the prevailing economic hardships faced by many property owners. This leniency has led to a proliferation of unfinished houses, amplifying safety concerns in the community.
As a consequence, residents are calling for the re-establishment of Neighbourhood Watch committees, which previously played a crucial role in maintaining safety and security in Chiredzi. These committees could patrol the neighbourhoods, providing a visible presence and deterring criminal activity.
As Chiredzi continues to evolve into a bustling hub, the need for effective community safety measures has never been more pressing. Residents urge local authorities to engage with property owners to find solutions that ensure unfinished houses do not continue to be breeding grounds for crime. Neighbourhood watch committees safeguard the community’s growth and well-being.
