Harare, (New Ziana) – The Zimbabwe government recently distributed about ZWG 7 million under the Urban Cash for Cereal Scheme as part of the drought mitigation interventions, a Cabinet Minister has said. Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Dr Jenfan Muswere told the media after the Cabinet meeting that ZWG7 million was disbursed on September 13 in some urban wards where the registration of beneficiaries has been completed.

The registration exercise is continuing together with data cleaning, validation and paysheet generation for the remaining urban wards as 6 215 775 people are expected to receive food assistance during the second cycle of the blitz grain distribution to run from August to October this year. During the first cycle of food distribution, 5 479 704.51 out of a targeted 6 140 924 beneficiaries received food aid, translating to 89.2 percent of the people initially targeted to get food assistance.

Muswere said 3 859.15 metric tons of mealie-meal/maize grain had been collected under the Emergency School Feeding Program as of September 12. “Cabinet noted that the school feeding program has commenced well, with schools managing to provide hot meals for their learners,” he said.

“The second phase of the Blitz Grain Distribution is progressing well with a significant increase having been recorded on the quantum of grain moved. The Grain Marketing Board (GMB) is replenishing depots allowing for improved distribution within the stipulated timeframe.”

Regarding the Zunde RaMambo/Isiphala SeNkosi program, Muswere said all chiefs nationwide had been allocated to respond to distress calls covering the most vulnerable while they were waiting for their monthly allocations.

“So far 4 195.47 metric tons of grain have been collected by the Chiefs,” he said. Zimbabwe is running a blitz to distribute food aid to about 6 million food insecure people in rural areas while 1.7 million in urban areas will benefit from a cash transfer program after the country, and some others in the region, was hit by an El Nino-induced drought that destroyed most of the crops this season.
