Harare (New Ziana) – Zimbabwe’s battle against Covid-19 can be won utilising the great resolve similar to that shown by the country’s liberators who won a bitter armed struggle against a formidable opponent, a senior government official said on Friday.

Zimbabwe, which will celebrate its 40th independence anniversary on Saturday, currently has 24 Covid-19 cases including 3 deaths.

The independence celebrations, which were supposed to be held in Bulawayo, were postponed as a precautionary measure against the spread of the Covid-19 outbreak.

The Bulawayo celebrations were supposed to be the first ones held outside Harare since 1980.

Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet Dr Misheck Sibanda said as the nation turns 40, greater resolve was needed to safeguard the gains of Independence in the face of the killer disease, Covid-19.

“The global health emergency posed by the Covid-19 outbreak demands that we redouble our support for His Excellency the President’s clarion call for the unity of purpose and resourcefulness required for national survival,” he said in a congratulatory message to President Mnangagwa on independence eve.

“The pandemic might shake our foundations and threaten to reverse the gains of our hard-won independence, but our resolve and collective response shall bring victory. That victory will enable our beloved motherland to commit more resources to innovation and development for the transformation of livelihoods.”

Dr Sibanda said although the Covid-19 pandemic would hamper government plans, it was determined to attain vision 2030.

“The decade ahead requires acceleration of the migration to digital technologies as we seek to attain the objectives of vision 2030 of a prosperous upper middle income economy as well as a knowledge and technology driven society,” he said.

“As such therefore, we will unequivocally support the leadership in implementing the whole-of-government approach towards sustainable transformation. The inclusive approach will strengthen the bond of cooperation involving government, the private sector and other non-state actors, traditional and community leadership, religious organisations and indeed all citizens through the devolution process as enunciated by the second republic.”
