Harare (New Ziana) – Zimbabwe has recorded another confirmed case of Coronavirus, bringing the total so far to 10, including one death, the Ministry of Health and Child Care has said.

In its daily update, the Ministry said one more person tested positive on Monday out of 13 samples tested.

The news came as Zimbabwe entered the second week of a 21-day national lockdown which President Emmerson Mnangagwa ordered as part of measures to prevent further spread of the disease.

“The tenth patient is a 24 year old female resident of Harare, who arrived from the United Kingdom two weeks ago,” it said.

“The local rapid response team visited her home after receiving an alert call to assess the family and samples were taken for Covid-19 testing. She is clinically stable and under self isolation at home.”

The Ministry said all the Covid-19 patients in the country were being monitored and recovering under self-isolation at their homes.

“The local health care workers continue to monitor and provide the essential clinical management and support for all the nine patients. Additionally, geospatial systems are being utilised to map all the known contacts of these cases for active contact tracing.”

Meanwhile, as a precautionary measure, government has compulsorily quarantined Zimbabweans who have returned from Botswana and the United States at designated places.

“Government takes the risk of potential imported transmission seriously. We have seven returnees who arrived from the US including six cruise ship workers who are in compulsory quarantine at a lodge in Harare,” Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services permanent secretary Nick Mangwana wrote on twitter.

“Those from Botswana are at Plumtree High and ZIPAM will be used for new arrivals.”

Asked why people returning from Covid-19 hotspots such as the United States were being allowed back into the country, Mangwana said: “We cannot stop Zimbabweans from coming home. Our constitution does not permit. But we can protect others by compulsorily quarantining them for 21 days before allowing them to mingle.”

“We are not blocking any Zimbabwean from coming home but they will be compulsorily quarantined in institutions for 21 days. Foreigners are not allowed to come,” he said.

The government has declared the pandemic, which has killed over 60 000 people globally, a national disaster.
