Harare (New Ziana) – Zimbabwe recorded its second Covid-19 recovery on Thursday, but its number of confirmed cases went up by one to 24, the Ministry of Health and Child Care has said.

In its daily update, the Ministry of Health said the recovered patient, who was not named, had now tested negative for the virus.

“To date Zimbabwe now has 24 confirmed cases including two recoveries and three deaths,” the Ministry said.

World Health Organisation guidelines state that patients who are being cared for at home must test negative in two samples collected at least 24 hours apart before they are released from isolation.

The ministry said it had stepped up coronavirus screening in all provinces in line with the new Covid-19 testing strategy.

A total of 583 tests were done on Thursday, giving a total of 1 299 screening and diagnostic tests done across the country to date.

Mash West Province had 126 people tested, Matabeleland North tested 11 people while Manicaland conducted tests of 57 suspected cases.

Masvingo Province recorded the highest number of tests done on Thursday at 128, Mashonaland Central tested 122 people, Matabeleland South 24, Midlands five, Harare 74 while Bulawayo conducted 36 tests.

“Of all the PCR tests done in Harare today (Thursday) one was positive for Covid-19 while all the PCR tests done in Bulawayo today (Thursday) were negative for Covid-19.”

The Ministry, however, did not provide additional information on the latest case, but gave an update on five previously announced cases.
“Four of the five confirmed cases reported yesterday (Wednesday) were contacts of one person.

Case 19 is a four year old girl, while cases 20, 21 and 22 involve a 10 year old, 34 year old and 16 year old female resident of Bulawayo who were all contacts of case 16,” it said.

“They were tested by our rapid response team as part of our intensified surveillance and contact tracing for Covid-19. All are stable on self isolation at home with mild disease.”

The Ministry added: “Case 23 is a 52 year old female resident of Bulawayo who was a contact of case 15. She is stable, on self-isolation and home and with mild disease.”
