Harare,  (New Ziana) – Zimbabwe increased electricity imports by more than 18 percent in the third quarter of the year to mitigate a deficit mainly caused by subdued generation at its Kariba Hydro Electric Power Plant. which was affected by low water levels in Lake Kariba.

The Kariba plant was affected by low water levels in Lake Kariba, but the country generally suffers from insufficient installed electricity generating capacity, which stands at 2 800MW against demand of between 4 000 to 5 177 megawatts (MW). To meet its national development vision aspirations, the country needs about 11 000MW by 2030.

The national power utility, the Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA), has committed to ensure the country has the required 3 500MW by 2025 to support national economic programmes under the National Development Strategy 1 (NDS I).

In a report on electricity generation for the months of July, August and September this year, the Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency (ZIMSTAT) said a production index of 105.8 was recorded, reflecting a quarter-on-quarter percentage increase of 4.2 from 101.5 in the second quarter of the year.

The index reflects a year-on-year increase of 4.5 percent when compared to 101.2 recorded in the third quarter of last year.

“A total of 2 666.8GWh of electricity were generated during 3rd quarter 2024. Hwange Thermal Power and Kariba Power Stations accounted for 77.8 and 18.6 percent, respectively,” said the report.

“A total of 611.1GWh of electricity were imported in 3rd quarter 2024, reflecting an 18.6 percent increase from 515.4GWh imported in 2nd quarter 2024.

About 49.9 percent of the 611.1 GWh electricity imported during 3rd quarter 2024 was from Eskom (South Africa), while HCB (Mozambique) and EDM (Mozambique), provided 19 percent and 18 percent, respectively.”

The report said the total volume of electricity distributed during the quarter under review was 2279.5GWh, reflecting a 6.7 percent increase compared to the second quarter.

“Manufacturing, transport and construction sectors combined, received 790.6GWh of the distributed electricity during 3rd quarter 2024.”
